Up until about 15 years ago, once you received a tattoo it was considered permanent. It wasn’t till the early 90s that lasers were approved for the removal of unwanted tattoos.
Laser tattoo removal is performed using a q-switch laser. Q-switch lasers fire pulses of very high peak power for a duration that is measured in a nanosecond, or one billionth of a second.
When someone receives a tattoo, thousands of particles of ink are embedded within the dermal layer of the skin. The body does a great job of getting rid of foreign particles, but tattoo ink particles are too big for the body to dispose of. The laser used in tattoo removal is attracted to the ink in the dermal layer.
The short high powered pulses of the laser heat the ink to levels that pulverise it into smaller pieces through a process called selective photothermolysis. As the laser light heats the target ink to a higher temperature it causes the ink to collapse and a shock wave. The shock wave then causes brittle particles like ink surrounding the area to fracture into smaller pieces while having little to no impact on surrounding skin tissue. The lymphatic system starts removing the small particles of ink, effectively diminishing the amount of tattoo ink particles in the dermis.
Laser tattoo removal is done with 3 different types of lasers in order to cover the full spectrum of colors that might be in any given tattoo; The Nd:Yag, Ruby, and KPT laser. It takes multiple sessions of laser tattoo removal spaced anywhere from 4-8 weeks apart per session for complete tattoo removal.
Based on the location of the tattoo on the body, age of the tattoo, professionalism of the tattoos execution, and what colors were used it can take anywhere between 4 and 10 sessions to completely remove a tattoo. Some tattoos may take more sessions, especially if the client is a smoker.
With each session less and less ink is left in the dermis until the tattoo has been completely removed. Laser tattoo removal effectiveness is highly predicated on two things; the technician’s ability to put together a sound, safe, yet effective treatment plan and the patient’s immune system/lifestyle.
